Let’s get to know you! Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a fitness instructor?
I’ve been a gym rat for a long time. When the market crashed in ‘08, an instructor at the gym encouraged me to think about instructing and to sign up for a group exercise training class. I did sign up for the class under her mentorship and actually went to school for my cert in fitness training. The rest is history.
How would you describe your classes?
Educational and intense. I always want the participants to leave knowing the “why” behind that hard workout we just had.
As a coach, what are your top sources of inspiration and motivation?
Seeing the look of accomplishment on a participant’s face. It makes me feel good as a coach when a client reaps the reward of their hard work.
What have been some learnings you’ve had being a fitness instructor that you wish you knew when you first began? Any advice you’d give to brand new instructors?
Embrace flexibility and learn how to read the class. When I first started, it was very hard for me to deviate from my class plan. I was going to “make” the class enjoy this class that I had planned. Now, by the time I have finished the warmup I have a sense of the class’s vibe and can make adjustments to my plan then. My goal is to make them feel good about their decision to take a class with me.
