“Embracing our differences adds much more value to our lives than rejecting and downgrading what we don’t know.”

Adriana, let’s get to know you! So, you're originally from Caracas, Venezuela, but have lived in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the US - tell us about how your global experiences have shaped who you are today.

Our differences are what make our cultures rich and our races unique, but deep down we all want the same: to be loved, valued, and included. Everywhere I lived I brought my Latin flavors, but deeply embraced the traditions and cultures of the place that hosted me; I carry a piece of them with me today. Embracing our differences adds much more value to our lives than rejecting and downgrading what we don’t know.

As a coach, what are your top sources of inspiration and motivation?

Music for sure! I am also inspired when I touch a person’s life for a day and add a grain of sand to their health. Everyone wants to be fit and healthy, and the fact I can make it happen for a few or many to a certain degree fuels me. For me fitness is medicine, never a size.

What have been some learnings you’ve had being a fitness instructor that you wish you knew when you first began? Any advice you’d give to brand new instructors?

The biggest learning is: own the room. Be confident enough to make a mistake and move on. You are going to miss a count, miss the beat drop, etc., but still what you bring into the class is more profound than that. I’ve also learned what to say and when. “Good job” is a banned sentence for me. I like saying things more along the lines of “what you put in is what you get out.” Finally, using descriptions is a major learning. “Add gear until it feels you are riding on wet cement,” “take yourself to the beach,” etc. Meet each rider at his/her/their level. And, please, when you teach it’s not your workout time. Be inspired by moving, but know when to motivate and be there for your people. That time might be the only space they get to work on themselves. Hold that in a very special place.
